ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Replacing the previous OHSAS 18001 standard, it provides a framework for organisations to proactively improve safety performance, reduce workplace injuries, and demonstrate compliance to clients, regulators, and stakeholders.

Why ISO 45001 Matters in South Africa

While ISO 45001 certification is voluntary, it is increasingly required by large corporates and government entities as a condition of doing business. For South African SMMEs, certification opens doors to contracts that would otherwise be inaccessible. It also provides a structured framework that goes beyond OHS Act compliance, helping organisations build genuinely safer workplaces.

The PDCA Framework

ISO 45001 is built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. Plan: establish objectives and processes to deliver results aligned with your organisation’s OHS policy. Do: implement the processes as planned. Check: monitor, measure, and evaluate performance against the policy and objectives. Act: take actions to improve performance continuously.

Key Implementation Steps

Begin with a gap analysis comparing your current practices to ISO 45001 requirements. Secure top management commitment — the standard requires demonstrable leadership involvement, not just sign-off. Define the scope of your management system. Conduct a thorough hazard identification and risk assessment process. Develop and document your OHS policy, objectives, and processes. Implement the system across the organisation. Conduct internal audits and a management review. Engage a certification body for the external audit.

How Long Does Implementation Take?

For a small to medium organisation with basic systems already in place, implementation typically takes six to twelve months. Larger organisations or those starting from scratch may require eighteen months or more.
